When faced with parenting approaches that challenge our construct of ‘good enough’ caregiving it is important to reflect on the reasons that have led the family to be in care proceedings. For families that have migrated from countries that hold very different views about the role of parenting, it is crucial that enough thought is given to the impact of cultural beliefs and the parents’ understanding of acceptable caregiving practices in the UK and the law related to child welfare. This course will support you to understand the life journeys that your clients from other cultures have taken and equip you to ask the right questions on their behalf. The course covers the following key areas:
- What do we mean by culture?
- Acculturation Journeys: Family migration and settlement in the UK
- Cultural differences in raising children
- When rituals and beliefs are harmful
- The impact of cultural beliefs and practices on care proceedings
- The difficulties of applying Western approaches to communication, assessment and intervention
- Viewing cases through a cultural lens and cultural competency
